Yesterday we lost Cosimo Matassa, so one of the highlights of this week or any week is listening to some of the remarkable music to come out of his J&M Studio. Matassa created an environment that encouraged great talent to be great, and the power present in even his lesser known tracks reflects his importance to the history of rock 'n' roll.
Friday: 5th Ward Weebie, 10 p.m., Gasa Gasa: At a time when bounce is often a high speed clatter, 5th Ward Weebie had a hit this summer with an old school—by bounce standards—hit with “Let Me Find Out Pt. 1.” (tickets) Also on Friday: Psycho Sisters, 9 p.m., Chickie Wah Wah; David Nail, 8 p.m., House of Blues (tickets); Bionica, Vox and the Hound, The Breton Sound, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks (tickets); J Boog, Hot Rain, Inna Vision, 8:30 p.m., House of Blues’ Parish (tickets)
Saturday: Delta Spirit, EDJ, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: For those concerned that indie rock lacks gravity and purpose, Delta Spirit is your band. On Into the Wild, the songs are big, beautiful and full of unmistakable importance. (tickets) Also on Saturday: MC Frontalot, Dr. Awkward, Corn Mo, 9 p.m., The BEATnik (tickets); Feufollet, Alexis and the Samurai, 11 p.m., d.b.a.; T Bird and The Breaks, 10 p.m., Freret Street Publiq House (tickets); Alvin Youngblood Hart, 10 p.m., Howlin’ Wolf’s Den (tickets); Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Glen David Andrews, 10 p.m., Tipitina’s (tickets)
Sunday: Ramsay Midwood, 10 p.m., Circle Bar: Austin blues rocker Ramsay Midwood has been called psychedelic, perhaps because there’s something trippy about how high he sounds with his tentative guitar strum and uncertain way with a melody. But he’s uneasy in a captivating way, perhaps a folk artist, perhaps not.
Tuesday: DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, 8 p.m., House of Blues: The two turntablists perform together to pay tribute to hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, spinning exclusively vinyl from Bambaataa’s collection of more than 40,000 records. (tickets) Also on Tuesday: Lydia Loveless, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks (tickets); Chris Robinson Brotherhood, 8:30 p.m., Tipitina’s (tickets)
Thursday: Earth, King Dude, 7 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: A night of slow, droning metal that would be art metal if the bands didn’t so obviously enjoy being brutally heavy. (tickets) Also on Thursday: Bun B, 10 p.m., The Howlin’ Wolf (tickets)
