This week in New Orleans clubs, "Treme" gives back, we celebrate Elvis and the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, and Bieber plays the Arena.
Friday:The Krewe of Rolling Elvi 10th Anniversary feat. Atomic Daddy-O, Live Without Elvis, Clockwork Elvis, and the Jailhouse Rockers, 9 p.m., The Howlin' Wolf: It's hard to imagine another town where a bunch of scooter-riding, jumpsuit-wearing Elvis fans could not only find each other but create their small space in the city's culture. Officially, the anniversary of Elvis' birth was Tuesday, but that won't stop this celebration of homemade Elvisdom. Saturday: My Lil Darlin Treme All Star Revue, 8 p.m., Tipitina's: Treme has worked to help raise money for local music-related non-profits during the time that it has been shooting in New Orleans, and those efforts continue Saturday with a show that includes Paul Sanchez and The Rolling Road Show, Little Freddie King, Guitar Lightin’ Lee, Robert Parker, The Pfister Sisters and Clarence “Frogman” Henry. Clarke Peters will host the show which also promises an appearance by Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, both of whom appeared on the show last season. In addition to general admission tickets, there will be a VIP package that includes a meet and greet with the cast before the show. Proceeds benefit The Roots of Music and Tipitina's Foundation. Monday: Papa Grows Funk, 10 p.m., The Maple Leaf Bar: On Wednesday, John Gros announced that six months from now, the band will go on hiatus, so see them while you can.
Tuesday: Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, 7 p.m., New Orleans Arena: Bieber is one of the most ubiquitous figures in our culture right now, and Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" was one of the songs of 2012. Does that mean the show will feel like deja vu, even as it's happening? (tickets) Also on Tuesday: Kopecky Family Band, The Eastern Sea, Sports and Leisure, 9 p.m., The Hi Ho Lounge
Wednesday: The English Beat, The Local Skank, 8:30 p.m., House of Blues: How did this show escape Gretna Fest? The only original member of The English Beat in the lineup is singer Dave Wakeling, but as last year's English Beat box set reminded me, Wakeling has a lot of great material to draw on. (tickets)
Thursday: Benefit for the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, 9 p.m., The Howlin' Wolf: The New Orleans Suspects will play this benefit show with a host of musical guests including Dr. John, George Porter Jr., and the Bonerama Horns. Other Stuff
Tuesday night, Tess Brunet will play a free in-store show at Euclid Records at 5 p.m. in support of her fall release, The Great Nothing, then a show at 9 that night at Siberia with openers Ben De La Cour and Julie Odell.
Looking ahead, Leonard Cohen's “Old Ideas World Tour” will come to the Mahalia Jackson Theater on March 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 18 through Ticketmaster.
