The NYC-based stand-up headlines the opening night of this year’s stand-up comedy-focused Hell Yes Fest.

Since 2011, Hell Yes Fest has taken a number of forms, usually with a mix of stand-up and improv comedy. This year will be focused on stand-up comedy with most of the shows taking place at Comedy House NOLA in Fulton Street.
Matt Ruby started performing in New York in 2006, and his most recent stand-up special, 2021’s Feels Like Matt Ruby, is up on YouTube. In an interview, he advised young comedians to “think like a craftsman,” and that rings true in Ruby’s comedy. His stand-up has the ease that comes with logging the hours onstage, honing jokes until they sound like something he thought of moments before going on stage.
“I really just wanted to tell the truth and I realized that funny people seem to get away with doing that more than anyone else,” Ruby said, remembering why he started in comedy. .His truth doesn’t blow the whistle on the world as much as it reveals it to be a bumbling mess.
This year’s Hell Fest also includes Ruby, and shows at the Comedy House NOLA headlined by Rita Brent on Thursday, Natalie Cuomo on Friday, and Ed Black on Sunday. Tickets to those shows and the all-access pass are on sale now.
Saturday afternoon will be “The Open Mic from Hell,” which is billed as a “live comedy obstacle course” and involves comedians taking on challenges during their time. Tickets are on sale now.
The closing night show at Republic NOLA features Luke Null, Koshadillz, JQ Palms, Kymbra Li, and Joe Piotrowicz, and tickets are on sale now.
