Friday: Maggie Koerner, The Honorable South, Painted Hands, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: The big voiced Koerner is reaching a new audience and getting a lot of attention as the current singer with Galactic. Saturday: Sweet Crude, Cardinal Sons, Julie Odell, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: Sam Craft and Alexis Marceaux lead this very successful effort to merge Cajun French and ebullient, percussion-heavy indie rock. Monday: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, 8 p.m., Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts: Time hasn’t moderated Nick Cave’s dark vision, with souls at stake in every song, very, very, very lightly balanced by his grim sense of humor. But musically if not lyrically, he's less apocalyptic, making the drama more insidious and inviting. (tickets)
Wednesday: Yonatan Gat, DANNY, Birthstone, 10 p.m., Siberia: Yonatan Gat made his name as the guitarist for Israel’s Monotonix, who are famous for taking their show into the crowd, drums and all. He makes a genuinely unexpected sound, merging a variety of musical cultures into a rock ’n’ roll sound. Other Stuff
This weekend is Gasa Gasa’s one-year anniversary, and the venue on Freret Street will celebrate with Brian Hyken and the Wanderlust on Friday, Tank and the Bangas recording a live album on Saturday with special guest Big Freedia, and a Sunday afternoon barbecue with The Kid Carsons, Sirens, Sharks Teeth, Valerie, and Sassyfras.
Beyoncé and Jay Z bring their “On the Run” tour to the Superdome Sunday, with the show loosely tied together by a story of the two as robbers on the lam. I have to say, if there’s any couple that it’s hard to buy as outlaws, it’s music’s dominant power couple. Reports from the tour say that the production and their professionalism and glamor carry the day, and that’s much easier to believe. (tickets)
Dave Hill accompanies his comedy with his guitar, and he’ll be at One Eyed Jacks Wednesday with Andrew Polk, Fayard Lindsey, and Molly Ruben-Long. Hill shot a series of comedy shorts with Down’s Phil Anselmo, and some of those shorts will be screened, and Hill and Anselmo will take questions from the audience. (tickets)
