Black & White and Read All Over, Professor Longhair's house party, Animal Collective and Kendrick Lamar are a few of the highlights in a big week in New Orleans.

Shows and events that should be on your radar this week.

Friday: New Orleans Suspects live recording, 10 p.m., The Maple Leaf: The New Orleans Suspects have emerged as one of most active post-Radiators bands with Reggie Scanlan holding down the rhythm section with "Mean" Willie Green.

Also on Friday: The Lee Boys, 11 p.m., Blue Nile; The Polish Ambassador, Derek Vanscoten, 11:30 p.m., The Howlin' Wolf (tickets); Dayna Kurtz, 8 p.m., Chickie Wah Wah

Saturday: Fess "House Party New Orleans Style" w/ George Porter Jr. and the Tipitina's All Stars, 8 p.m., Tipitina's: Tipitina's Foundation is understandably spearheading the effort to raise money to preserve Professor Longhair's home, which has fallen into serious disrepair. George Porter Jr. leads an all-star band to provide entertainment for the night, with guests Dr. John and Ellis Marsalis. (tickets)

Sunday: Kendrick Lamar, Stalley., 8 p.m., House of Blues: Kendrick Lamar's brings another kind of hip-hop straight outta Compton. He's serious, smart and artful without being preachy or weighty. (tickets)

Also on Sunday: Jackie Greene, 8 p.m., Tipitina's (tickets); Blue October, 7 p.m., Joy Theater (tickets)

Monday: All-American Rejects, Boys Like Girls, 7 p.m., Mahalia Jackson Theater: The Warped Tour spawned many bands that live in the pop/punk/rock nexus, and All-American Rejects live comfortably in that space - punk by inclination, pop by aspiration, and rock by contemplation. (tickets)

Wednesday: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, 8 p.m., Mahalia Jackson Theater: This psychedelic folk-rock collective doesn't shy from its desire to be uplifting and optimistic, and it succeeds - partly for musical reasons and partly through sheer exuberance. (tickets)

Also on Wednesday: Dinosaur Jr., 8 p.m., Tipitina's (tickets); Victor Wooten, Naughty Professor, 7 p.m., Howlin' Wolf (tickets)  

Thursday: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Band of Skulls, Santigold, 8 p.m., New Orleans Arena: Does anything need to be said at this late date? (tickets)

Also on Thursday, TOPS with Dominique LeJeune and DeftJams, 7 p.m., One Eyed Jacks (tickets); Bush, Prosevere, 8 p.m., House of Blues (tickets)

OTHER STUFF

This weekend starts the end of seven-days-a-week production at The Times-Picayune, and a number of events will coincide with the occasion. Friday morning, The Oxford American will present a New South Journalism Symposium at the Historic New Orleans Collection's Williams Research Center. It runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free with registration. Call (504) 523-4662 to register. In other post- Picayune activities, there will be a fundraiser - "Black & White and Read All Over" - Saturday night at the Howlin' Wolf from 6-9 p.m. with an all-star band led by David Torkanowsky and confirmed (so far) performances by Camile Baudoin, Matt Lemmler, Charmaine Neville, Pfister Sisters, Martin Krusche and John Rankin.  

The People Say Project is getting involved in politics with a series of District B Candidate Forums at Handsome Willy's. The first takes place Friday with Eric Strachan from 6 to 9 p.m. Next week, Marlon Horton - 10th Ward Buck - will be on hand, and on October 12, Dana Kaplan will attend.

Friday, the New Orleans Museum of Art presents "Love in the Garden" in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The event includes entertainment by Sasha Masakowski, John Boutte, DJ Soul Sister and the 610 Stompers, and food from 40 local restaurants including Acme Oyster House, Coquette, Elizabeth's, Galatoire's, Lilette, Mike's on the Avenue and more. Tickets range from $65 to $120.

The Timecode: Nola Film Festival runs this weekend at One Eyed Jacks, celebrating what can be done with rudimentary tools such as a Super 8 camera. There are screenings Friday and Saturday nights including Where Y'at (Hello), a collaborative project shot by 15 filmmakers on 15 corners. There will be a workshop Saturday afternoon and a performance by Consortium of Genius Friday night. 

Thursday night the Ogden Museum of Southern Art starts a series of events with Tav Falco, the photographer, filmmaker and musician best known for leading Panther Burns. He'll open a show at the Ogden Thursday night, and at 8:30 p.m. he'll be on hand to preside over the screening of some of his short films. On Friday, Panther Burns will perform in the Ogden's Taylor Library at 9 p.m. Tickets for the films and concert are on sale now.
