This Week's Soundtrack looks ahead to shows by Fiona Apple, Animal Collective, Hoodie Allen, and the benefit for the preservation of Professor Longhair's house, as well as new music from Grizzly Bear, Dinosaur Jr. and Voodoo Experience acts Kaskade and the Gaslamp Killer.

This Week's Soundtrack:

1. "Willie Mae" - Professor Longhair: On Friday, Tipitina's will host two activities to help raise money to renovate Professor Longhair's family home. On Saturday, September 29, there will be a concert, "Fess' House Party New Orleans Style" with music by George Porter Jr., Dr. John, Ellis Marsalis and more. It will be preceded by the 1st Annual “Rhythm and Blues 5K Run.” The race starts at 5 p.m. at Tipitina's, and marching bands will serenade the runners along the way. There will be food and refreshments after the race, and there will be prizes awarded to those who run in the best costumes commemorating famous musicians. Proceeds will go to New Orleans area high school marching band programs to help with uniforms and marching shoes. To register, visit the New Orleans Track Club website.

2. "She Hates the Bass" - Stalley: The rapper is a part of Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group, and he'll open for Kendrick Lamar at the House of Blues on Sunday. He has a new mixtape, Savage Journey to the American Dream, which includes a collaboration with Curren$y.

3. "Same Knife Cuts the Sheep Cuts the Goat" - Horace Trahan: Trahan plays Zydeco Night Thursday at the Rock 'n' Bowl.

4. "James Franco" - Hoodie Allen: The indie hip-hop artist plays the House of Blues Wednesday with G-Eazy. The hook to "James Franco" is The Meters' "Hand Clapping Song."

5. "Flange Face" - The Gaslamp Killer: Gaslamp Killer will play this year's Voodoo Experience, and he has a new album, Breakthrough.

6. "Llove" - Kaskade: EDM artist Kaskade also has a new EP, and he too will perform on the Le Plur stage at Voodoo this year.

7. "Michael Praytor, Five Years Later" - Ben Folds Five: I watched The Sing-Off because Ben Folds is easily the smartest and most perceptive judge on any of the television singing competitions, and he's back with a new album, The Sound of the Life of the Mind.

8. "Giftshoppe" - Menomena: Menomena will play One Eyed Jacks on October 2, and they have a new album, Moms.

9. "Sleeping Ute" - Grizzly Bear: Grizzly Bear has a new album, Shields.

10. "Watch the Corners" - Dinosaur Jr.: I Bet on Sky is the new album from the original lineup of Dinosaur Jr., and they'll be at Tipitina's October 3.

11. "Daredevil" - Fiona Apple: Fiona Apple plays the House of Blues Monday in support of her recent and very good album with a very long name. She made news on the weekend by being arrested for possession of hashish in Texas, then again when she played Houston and talked about it.

12. "Spend, Spend, Spend (dub version)" - The Slits: Last week I interviewed Mica Levi from Micachu and the Shapes, and while her music doesn't sound like The Slits, it got me thinking about the British all-woman punk band and the post-punk bands that followed.

13. "Moonjock" - Animal Collective: From Animal Collective's new and semi-abrasive Centipede Hz. They'll play the House of Blues Saturday night. 

14. "Waste" - Micachu and the Shapes: They rethink pop from the ground up, reconsidering its sound, instrumentation and song length (leaning seriously toward short). After a couple of listens, the industrial whir becomes part of their songs' atmosphere and not their defining features.

15. "Credit in the Straight World" - Young Marble Giants: Hole covered this on Live Through This, but it doesn't improve anything on this spare, low-key version.

16. "Only Loved at Night" - The Raincoats

17. "Newtown (Peel Sessions version) - The Slits: Most deluxe editions are padded with unnecessary extras, but the dub tracks and the Peel Sessions added to the re-release of Cut show how quickly the band was developing and improving. 

18. "Tailgate Ramble" - Preservation Hall Jazz Band: On Tuesday, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will release two new albums, Preservation Hall Jazz Band: The 50th Anniversary Collection - a four-disc career retrospective - and St. Peter & 57th St. - highlights of the band's 50th anniversary show at Carnegie Hall.

19. "Shreveport to New Orleans" - Roger Creager: The Texas country singer covers the requisite bases - a balladeer, a honky tonk singer, a bluesman and on this track, a western swing singer. He'll be at Tipitina's on Thursday.

20. "Dancer" - Thomas Johnson and the People: The folk-rock band plays d.b.a. on Sunday.

21. "Millions" - Eternal Summer: The two or three-person dream pop band plays the Circle Bar Monday.  

22. "C'mon" - The Soft Pack: The indie rock band plays One Eyed Jacks Thursday.

23. "Superpowers" - The Polish Ambassador: The dreamy (in the musical sense) EDM producer and DJ from Oakland plays the Howlin' Wolf Friday.

24. "F*ck Your Ethnicity" - Kendrick Lamar: The critically acclaimed hip-hop artist from Los Angeles plays the House of Blues Sunday.
