This Week's Spotify Soundtrack previews new music from Melody's Echo Chamber, Green Day, Sotho Sounds and Kreayshawn (with Sissy Nobby); and shows by Santigold, Victor Wooten, Dinosaur Jr., TOPS and more.
This Week's Soundtrack looks ahead to the opening of Panther Burns' Tav Falco's photography show, films and concert at the Ogden.
This Week's Soundtrack:
1. "Brother Father Sister Mother" - Tim Maia: Recently, Luaka Bop released a new compilation of music by -70s Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia, who's story's as interesting as his music.
2. "Black Starliner Must Come" - Culture: Maia's idiosyncratic spirituality brought this to mind.
3. "Abendigo" - The Abyssinians: And Culture did the same for this.
4. "Ha Kele Monateng" - Sotho Sounds: From the new release, Junk Funk. All the instruments were made from found objects by this group from South Africa.
5. "Quer Queira, Quer Nao Queira" - Tim Maia
6. "Twerkin!!" - Kreayshawn feat. Diplo and Sissy Nobby: Kreayshawn briefly creased the cultural consciousness with "Gucci Gucci," but little on the new Somethin' 'Bout Kreay says she'll return to that status despite the presence of Diplo and Nobby on this track.
7. "Flip Flop" - Victor Wooten: The bassist who made is his name with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones plays the Howlin' Wolf Wednesday. That day, we'll have an interview with Wooten here at My Spilt Milk.
8. "L.E.S. Artistes" - Santigold: If I were going to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the New Orleans Arena Thursday, I'd go early enough to see Santigold.
9. "Lamborghini Angels" - Lupe Fiasco: Lupe Fiasco appeared at Xavier University to discuss the "B" word about a month ago after the release of "Bitch Bad" from Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1. Now the album's out.
10. "Careless Love" - Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Merrill Garbus: I like that Preservation Hall Jazz Band is working with younger artists, but I there's more passion than precision in Garbus' performance on the new St. Peter & 57th Street.
11. "She's the One That Got It" - Tav Falco and Panther Burns: Starting on Thursday, Tav Falco will open a show of his photography at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. On Thursday night, Falco will be on hand to screen some of his short films, on Friday night he and Panther Burns will play the Taylor Library, and the show will officially open Saturday night during Art for Art's Sake. Watch for an interview with Falco here later in the week.
12. "Wet Bar" - Ross Johnson: Johnson was the drummer in the early incarnations of Panther Burns, though he was kicked out before the recording of "She's the One That's Got It" and Behind the Magnolia Curtain, which was recently re-released.
13. "Oh, How She Dances" - Tav Falco and Panther Burns: A less ragged Panther Burns that is more indicative of how the band would evolve.
14. "Whispers in the Dark" - Mumford & Sons: From the self-consciously serious, self-consciously uplifting new Babel.
15. "Picture of an Island" - Charlie Mars: The Mississippi-based rock 'n' roll journeyman plays The Howlin' Wolf Friday.
16. "Fiya Wata" - Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes: More upliftingness, but Sharpe's is odder, and that psychedelic dimension takes the edge off that sense of purpose. They'll be at the Mahalia Jackson Theater Wednesday.
17. "Crystalized" - Melody's Echo Chamber: One of my favorite tracks on today's soundtrack - a new psychedelic track from the self-titled debut album from Parisian Melody Prochet and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker.
18. "I Look Around" - The Rain Parade: "Crystalized" brought to mind L.A.'s Paisley Underground.
19. "Don't Pretend You Didn't Know" - Dinosaur Jr.: The original lineup plays Tipitina's Wednesday.
20. "Jet Fighter" - The Three O'Clock: More Paisley Underground.
21. "Sweet 16" - Green Day: From the new Uno! Obviously, the band taking some time off raises questions about their appearance at Voodoo, but since the band's press release said they were cancelling "promotional appearances" and not all appearances, I take that as a clue that Voodoo is still on their books.
22. "Stab My Back" - The All-American Rejects: The Warped Tour alumns play the Mahalia Jackson Theater tonight.
23. "Brickfield Nights" - The Boys: Modern pop-punk brought to mind first generation pop-punk.
24. "White Mice" - The Mo-Dettes: .. and more.
25. "Diamond Look" - TOPS: Jane Penny's voice suggests the Montreal group's got a dream-pop side that never quite shows up, despite the airy keyboards. The band's too insistent and she sounds like she gets out of the house once in a while. They play One Eyed Jacks Thursday.
26. "Beautiful People" - Pet Shop Boys: I'd like to have selected something from their new Elysium, but it lacks the complexity of the Pets at their best. This is more my speed as Neil Tennant betrays a profound ambivalence toward the beautiful people. He hates them and can't wait to be one.
27. "ocket fall on Rocket Falls" - Godspeed You! Black Emperor: I saved this for last because Godspeed don't think short thoughts. They'll be at Tipitina's Sunday night.
