A Brother Sister Act
He's My Brother She's My Sister and The Hot 8 Brass Band top the week in New Orleans' nightlife, along with Maceo Parker and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
Two My Spilt Milk shows top the next week in live music in New Orleans.
Friday: Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Foxygen, Wampire, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: UMO is small for an orchestra - three pieces - and on the recently released II, they're not as lo-fi as on their debut album, but close enough to give their psychedelic songs context. A writer at Pitchfork found the extended tracks in the middle of the album tiresome; for me, they're the band at its most distinctive and trippy. Fortunately, the songs that bracket them offer more conventional pleasure. (tickets) Also on Friday: Bonerama, Joe Krown Trio w/ Russell Batiste & Walter "Wolfman" Washington, 10 p.m., Tipitina's (tickets); Kora Konnection, Sunpie Barnes & the Louisiana Sunspots plus the African Zydeco Review, 9 p.m., House of Blues' Parish (tickets); Feufollet, 10 p.m., d.b.a.
Saturday: Will Kimbrough, Brigitte DeMeyer, 9 p.m., Chickie Wah Wah: Guitarist Will Kimbrough has the chops and taste to rarely show just what he can do, and that combination has led to collaborations with many Americana/country greats. Most recently, he's been working with singer and songwriter Brigitte DeMeyer. Also on Saturday: Nadis Warriors, Pymp, 10 p.m. The Maison; Eagle Claw, The Snake and Pony Show, She's Still Dead, 10 p.m., Siberia (tickets);
Sunday: My Spilt Milk Presents He's My Brother She's My Sister, Paper Bird, Shakey Graves, 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: This Los Angeles-based indie folk-rock band is a family band as the name suggests. When their debut album title grouses Nobody Dances in This Town, it's because it's clear they like to. (tickets) Also on Sunday: My Spilt Milk Presents The Hot 8 Brass Band, 10 p.m., The Howlin' Wolf's Den (tickets); The New Orleans Legacy Band feat. Tom Sancton, 7 p.m., Preservation Hall
Tuesday: Scott, Seeger & Gillet, 8 & 10 p.m., Snug Harbor: I've become allergic to the Jazz Fest nighttime staple of putting together four or five musicians who don't normally play together, but this show isn't exactly that. Still, I'm curious what vocalist Cindy Scott, guitarist Brian Seeger and cellist Helen Gillet will come up with together. Also on Tuesday, Lindsey Stirling, The Vibrant Sound, 8 p.m., The House of Blues (tickets)
Thursday: Maceo Parker, DJ Soul Sister, 10 p.m., Tipitina's: Maceo is one of the defining sax voices in funk, having worked with James Brown and George Clinton. (tickets) Also on Thursday: "Ogden After Hours" feat. Micah McKee, 6 p.m., Ogden Museum of Southern Art; Don Vappie, 8 & 10 p.m., Snug Harbor; Lil' Wayne & the Same Ol' Two-Step, 8:30 p.m., Rock 'n' Bowl (tickets)
