Win Tickets to See Lord Huron

The Los Angeles-based folk-rock band will play The House of Blues Saturday, and My Spilt Milk has a pair of tickets to give away to the show.

Lord Huron’s Strange Trails presents a cinematic version of Western Americana, with sounds and songs that evoke broad vistas, open spaces, and people living elemental lives. The band is self-consciously literary—see the album’s cover art, and the conceit of 2011’s Lonesome Dreams that it was based on the fiction of the fictional writer George Ranger Johnson—but musically it comes with the sonic soft focus that once gave My Morning Jacket and Fleet Foxes a little added epicness. 

Although Lord Huron’s Ben Schneider doesn’t explicitly talk about Johnson in relation to Strange Trails, the songs are certainly of a piece with those on Strange Trails. Mayumi Okamoto reviewed the band’s show in Oakland last year, writing: 

The continuation of the narrative so beautifully created and inspired by Schneider’s fictional character George Ranger Johnson was carried forward during this show and we like to imagine Johnson and Schneider’s protagonist getting into mischief this time around during the band’s performance of “The World Ender” or looking forward to seeing his love again in “Meet Me in the Woods.” During Lord Huron’s performance of the latter, the storybook back drop of trees seemed to magically grow before your eyes as the lights reflected against them changed with the opening chords.
