This Week's Spotify Soundtrack looks forward to shows by Feufollet, Dr. John, Bill Kirchen and Dirtfoot, and checks out new releases from Booker T. and Pond.
1. "Bums on the Radio" - Feufollet: A cover of a Brass Bed song from The Color Sessions. Feufollet plays the Allways Lounge Saturday.
2. "So Young" - The Tontons: The Houston-based indie-pop band plays Gasa Gasa Sunday.
3. "No Future Shock" - TV on the Radio: I like how this sounds here.
4. "Whatever Happened to the Million Head Collide" - Pond: From the new Hobo Rocket. The critic at Pop Matters hears Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in this; maybe at the end. I hear The Flaming Lips far more prominently. Heavy and psychedelic in either case.
5. "We Won the War" - Micah McKee and Little Maker: From Patrons of The Saint. McKee and Little Maker plays Sunday happy hours at The Circle Bar.
6. "Bathroom Sink" - Dirtfoot: From Live and In Prison, an album and DVD that the Shreveport-based band recorded at the Wade Correctional Facility in Bossier Parish. They'll open for Rev. Horton Heat Tuesday at Tipitina's.
7. "Central Time" - Pokey LaFarge: Swing bandleader Pokey LaFarge was one of the high points of this year's Jazz Fest.
8. "Truck Stop at the End of the World" - Bill Kirchen: Guitar player Bill Kirchen made his name as the hot guitar picker on Commander Cody's "Hot Rod Lincoln," which has become an extended staple of his show. Kirchen returns to Chickie Wah Wah on Saturday with a new album, Seeds and Stems.
9. "In This World" - Dash Rip Rock: On Friday, Dash Rip Rock will play a celebration of Officer Rodney Thomas at Tipitina's Thursday. This song has one of Bill Davis' grimmest, most darkly funny lines: "In this world ... they call you on the phone / just to make sure you're sad and alone."
10. "Take It (I Love My Tribe)" - The Honorable South: Black rock bands are oddly rare, and New Orleans' Honorable South are a good, smart one. They play Tipitina's Saturday night with DJ RQAWAY.
11. "All Over the Place" - Booker T. with Luke James: From Booker T.'s new Sound the Alarm with New Orleans' Luke James on vocals.
12. "Autotune" - Luke James: James appearance at this year's Essence Music Festival was a reminder as to why only wrestlers' managers should ever be on the mic.
13. "Glowin'" - Dr. John: From Babylon, the period of his career that his current band refers to with its name, The Nite Trippers. So far, the band has received mixed reviews. You decide when they plays Friday night at Tipitina's.
14. "Love, The Devil" - Honey Ltd.: Light in the Attic Records recently released The Complete LHI Recordings by this Detroit-based girl group from 1968. Naturally, the album has an instrumental.
15. "I've Got Your Man" - Honey Ltd.: The psychedelic (bordering on easy listening) folk rock with harmonies sounds far more connected to Los Angeles than Detroit, which might explain "Eli's Coming" and "Silver Threads and Golden Needles."
