Jazz Fest: The Second Sunday's Schedule and Picks
Jazz Fest will honor Saturday's used tickets for what will certainly be a soggy finale to the 2016 Jazz Fest. Here are a schedule and highlights in downloadable form.
Saturday ended with a number of impromptu water features on the Fair Grounds. Drainage ditches cut into the infield became lakes, particularly at the Acura Stage, where video showed people going knee deep to cross it. The good news is that the water will likely have drained by the opening of Jazz Fest today. The bad news is that the grounds will likely be a muddy mess. And more storms are expected.
As a thank you to Jazz Fest fans and a make-up to those who attended Saturday to see the artists whose sets were cancelled by the early closure--Stevie Wonder, Beck, Snoop Dogg and Arturo Sandoval primary among them--the festival will honor all unused tickets for the the weekend as well as used tickets from Saturday. If you were there yesterday, you can do it again.
Today will be an unusual last day with a lot of the action at the Fais Do-Do Stage. The swamp pop show with G.G. Shinn and Gregg Martinez could be great, but it will almost certainly be so old-fashioned--the genre's point--that many looking for layers or an edge will find it perplexing. The last time I saw Shinn at the Ponderosa Stomp, he could have been a figure from a David Lynch movie with an angelic voice.
The day will include a tribute to Allen Toussaint on the Gentilly Stage featuring his band and special guests Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Jon Batiste, Jimmy Buffett and Davell Crawford. The Neil Young and Promise of the Real should move from solo Neil to heavy, protracted jams with Mikah and Lukas Nelson's band (Willie's sons) standing in for Crazy Horse.
