His music is less galvanizing than his name, but Bro Safari covers all the electronic bases.

EDM is a descriptor like “rock”—right, but so broad that when applied to electronic dance music, it says almost nothing. For Bro Safari, it’s more or less accurate. The veteran DJ/producer recently released “Reality,” and its verse and hook sung airily by Sarah Hudson are pure pop, but right at the point that you expect the song to take off ecstatically, the bottom drops out and face-melting bass turns the dance floor into a neon swamp.

On his Soundcloud page, “Reality” sits next to trap and moombahton remixes, all with an emphasis on sonic textures. None are quite what his name or image suggest, though. He’s not testing the borderlines of anything, but nothing says dude party either. He’s undoubtedly and deliberately accessible, so nothing sounds like the kind of art project his stenciled graphic images might suggest. Still, Bro Safari has become a tough name to carry around, he told an interviewer at Fuxwithit.com:

 I think the biggest problem with my project, and it’s not a problem for me, but a problem for other people, is the fact my name is “Bro Safari”. You know, there’s such a ridiculous stigma attached to it for people who don’t know anything about me. They see the name Bro Safari and they kind of fly off the handle like, “Oh my god what happened to the world, there’s somebody with the name Bro Safari,” when they don’t realize that it’s tongue-in-cheek.
