Lil Wayne took time out from rapping to dedicate himself to skateboarding, but that didn't stop him from releasing "Dedication 4."

Lil Wayne's strength is that he's never been obsessed with keeping it real; in fact, he's at his best when he's keeping it unreal. The new Dedication 4 mixtape with DJ Drama is heavy on the sex fantasies, but he's obviously entertaining himself with his own imagination, seeing how far out he can go. For me, that's him at his best. I laughed out loud at "I got B's like a student / bitch I am not a human and this dick is therapeutic."

The sense of humor and creativity keeps the new mixtape from being simply raunchy, but it's unquestionably raunchy. But it thankfully lacks the overdetermined sense of purpose that has bogged down his recent releases. He's not proving anything or asserting anything - he's simply riffing on a subject that brings out the best in him as a rapper.

He'll perform "No Worries" from Dedication 4 Thursday night on the MTV Video Music Awards.

In other Lil Wayne news, he was scheduled to open a skate park in the Lower Ninth Ward last week, but Hurricane Isaac forced that to be postponed. It has been tentatively rescheduled for September 26.
