Yesterday we lost Cosimo Matassa, so one of the highlights of this week or any week is listening to some of the remarkable music to come out of his J&M Studio. Matassa created an environment that encouraged great talent to be great, and the power present in even his lesser known tracks reflects his importance to the history of rock 'n' roll.

Sunday: Ramsay Midwood, 10 p.m., Circle Bar: Austin blues rocker Ramsay Midwood has been called psychedelic, perhaps because there’s something trippy about how high he sounds with his tentative guitar strum and uncertain way with a melody. But he’s uneasy in a captivating way, perhaps a folk artist, perhaps not.
Tuesday: DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, 8 p.m., House of Blues: The two turntablists perform together to pay tribute to hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, spinning exclusively vinyl from Bambaataa’s collection of more than 40,000 records. Saturday, Rising Tide 9 brings together New Orleans’ bloggers and online chattering class to talk about the future of the city in a series of panel discussions and workshops. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Andre Perry, who’ll address New Orleans’ education landscape. The daylong conference takes place at Xavier University’s Conference Venue (1 Drexel Dr.). (tickets)
Saturday, gallery/general store LA46 on St. Claude Avenue will feature live music with Sweet Jones at 8:00pm as part of the St. Claude galleries’ Second Saturday art walks.
