Voodoo News: Win Tickets and Saturday's Playlist

Voodoo returns after a turbulent 2015 edition. Foul weather turned City Park’s Festival Grounds to muddy soup to such an extent that the festival canceled Sunday entirely, and in January festival creator Steve Rehage was ousted by Live Nation, which acquired Voodoo in 2013. This year’s festival will be the first produced my C3 Presents, the production company that also produces Lollapalooza, ACL, and Shaky Beats and Shaky Knees in Atlanta. 

One of their goals this year was to restore hard rock to the Voodoo lineup—something that has long been part of the festival’s identity that had slipped in recent years. Last year’s Ozzy Osbourne and Friends set was a nod in that direction, but in general, heavy rock has been in decline at Voodoo as EDM has ascended. 

This year, Saturday night headliners on the Altar Stage are Tool, and co-director Sig Greenebaum told The New Orleans Advocate, “Tool is a band that we know the core Voodoo audience would absolutely love. Tool is absolutely endemic to Voodoo.” Saturday’s lineup loads up on metal and hard rock with Ghost, Bully, Nothing But Thieves, and The Pretty Reckless as well. 

We’re pulling together day-specific Spotify playlists, and Saturday’s misses only two acts—Church with Kidd Love back to back with Carmine P. Filthy (who we profiled last year), and Tool, which has not made its music available to Spotify. According to Spin:

Maynard James Keenan's band doesn't have a unique reason for staying away from digital music–like many on this list, he doesn't want his band's work consumed in random pieces. Unlike most, though, Tool is truly committed. The band's music isn't on iTunes or Spotify and it has never allowed its label to split up its songs into a greatest-hits collection.
