Voodoo News: Sunday is a Highlight
In some years, Sunday at Voodoo has felt like the festival's afterparty. Not this year.
Voodoo 2016 ends today with an impressive lineup. It was only after marking it for highlights that I’d marked more than half of it. Anderson .Paak and The Free Nationals and Grammatik got my attention when the lineup was released, and since the first song released from Beats Antique’s new album, Shadowbox, features the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, there’s every reason to expect that Pres Hall will join them at some point. I’m also looking forward to Pres Hall’s appearance in the Toyota Music Den, where they’ll be joined by My Spilt Milk Award winners Tank and the Bangas.
If the Arcade Fire show I saw last night at a party was a run-through of the show they’ll play tonight, I’m reconsidering my plans to split time between the band and The Chainsmokers. Part way through, it occurred to me, Yes, I’d definitely watch this set two days in a row.
I’m sorry that Charles Bradley had to bow out of Voodoo because a) he is getting treatment for stomach cancer, and b) the Screaming Eagle of Soul was the other act after Paak and Grammatik that buzzed me when the lineup was announced. Still, Morning 40 Federation are Voodoo veterans, and their woozy, crunching, horn-driven rock always feels right on time at the festival. It will be interesting to see how they fare playing opposite Tool singer Maynard James Keenan’s other project, but so far everybody has found an audience when the Altar Stage went dark and there was nothing there to hang out for.
