Voodoo: Behind the Beats
GRiZ, Claude VonStroke and Hello Negro are some of the more interesting offerings this year at Voodoo's Le Plur Stage. Here's our Soundcloud mix of the artists who'll play that stage.
In previous years, the Le Plur Stage was always slightly out of the way, so it was easy not to notice the crowds at the show. Last year, it moved out to the open and the size of the audiences for Afrojack, Bassnectar, Calvin Harris and Boys Noize made it clear how important the stage is to Voodoo.
This year's headliners on Le Plur are Zedd (Friday), Skrillex (Saturday) and Pretty Lights (Sunday), but some of the most interesting music on the stage will come earlier in the day. GRiZ is straight of out Detroit, but at home in New Orleans. His electro-soul sound is a joyful ménage-a-trois between dubstep, jazz, and funk. Not only great for listening, GRiZ’s live shows are spectacular as he rotates between his saxophone, guitar, and keyboard in what will be a much more ‘live’ performance than many other EDM acts set to hit the stage next weekend.
On the other end of the spectrum, head to Pete Tong or Claude VonStroke for a essential dose of house music. They’ll spinn records for a more low-key, vibing atmosphere that forces listeners to appreciate the subtleties of the tracks which, when repeated, create a collectively euphoric crowd experience.
Finally, New Orleans native Hello Negro will perform with an improvisational flair steeped in the local jazz tradition of the city.
