Spend a Night with Yo La Tengo

My Spilt Milk has tickets to see the band at Tipitina's May 1.

Part of Yo La Tengo's appeal is that through the band, much of the audience can see itself onstage. Members Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew are music fans like us who ended up on the right side of the monitors, and they seem to do things their way, just as we like to think we'd do. Their songs also don't sound hard to play, at least until a Kaplan guitar freak out, but there's an art to sounding artless, and that adds to the appeal because rock 'n' roll that isn't showy is so unusual.

Yo La Tengo returns to Tipitina's on May 1 in support of its new album, Fade. It is billed "An Evening with Yo La Tengo" and the band will perform two sets, one quiet and one raucous. As long-time fans of New Orleans music, they're looking forward to the show. Kaplan and Hubley have come to town as fans for the Ponderosa Stomp, and when I recently interviewed bassist James McNew, he was wearing an Eddie Bo pin on his hoodie. (Watch for the story closer to the show.)

My Spilt Milk is pleased to present Yo La Tengo at Tipitina's, and we have three pairs of tickets to give away to show. Register here to have a chance to win. The contest closes at noon on Tuesday, April 30.
