Lucinda Williams Launches Live-Stream Series to Help Tipitina's, Independent Music Venues
Williams pays tribute to Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and more in a series of live-streamed concerts.
[UPDATED] Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams will acknowledge the debt she and countless musicians owe to independent music venues with “Lu’s Jukebox.” Starting on October 29, she will launch a series of live-streamed concerts to benefit independent music venues, many of which booked Williams over the years. They have been hard hit by Coronavirus shut down, and general projections are that they will be among the last businesses to reopen. Since there has been little government support for this struggling industry, musicians and fans have tried to step in and help.
Williams and her band will perform in studio with HD-quality video and sound on “Lu’s Jukebox,” with each show dedicated to a different theme or artist:
October 29 - “Running Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty”
November 5 - “Southern Soul: From Memphis to Muscle Shoals & More”
November 19 - “Bob’s Back Pages: A Night of Bob Dylan Songs”
December 3 - “Funny How Time Slips Away: A Night of ’60s Country Classics”
December 17 - “Have Yourself a Rockin’ Little Christmas with Lucinda”
December 31 - “It’s Only Rock and Roll: A Tribute to The Rolling Stones”
Tickets are on sale now through the streaming platform Mandolin for the individual shows and the series as a whole. A percentage of the money from each one goes to independent music venues around the country including Tipitina’s, here in New Orleans—a venue she has played many times throughout her career.
“I guess the silver lining in all of this has been to be able to really get inside the songs of some of my favorite artists—see what makes them tick,” says Williams in a statement. “My hope for this project is that we’ll be able to help as many venues as we can. They’re our homes, as artists. We have to take care of them, for the sake of live music to come.”
“Lu’s Jukebox” will be tracked live by Grammy-award winning producer Ray Kennedy and is filmed in HD video by Neighborhoods Apart Productions.
