Jazz Fest: Monday's Highlights in the Clubs
Our picks for the day include daydrinking at d.b.a. to Cajun and swamp pop, marching bands and funk, British Camaro rock, and The Residents.
This first weekend of Jazz Fest 2018 is in the books, and while little music on the weekend was memorable, the weather and small to moderate crowds made it a great time to be at the Fair Grounds. You could rest your feet today after three days of stomping the track, but if you do, you’ll miss out on some pretty cool shows. Monday night is Instruments a-Comin’, a benefit for Tipitina’s Foundation, and the lineup inside is Tipitina’s boiled down to its essence. Funky New Orleans music is in the bar’s soul, and many of the most established names playing it in town will be part of the show, including Galactic, Flow Tribe, The New Orleans Suspects, Naughty Professor and Honey Island Swamp Band. A free high school marching band battle starts outside at 6 p.m., and it’s always pretty cool as well.
Also on Monday, the enigmatic San Francisco-based art rock band The Residents play the Music Box Village. Alex Rawls wrote about them elsewhere on My Spilt Milk, but since the band used to invent instruments they needed when the ones they wanted didn’t exist, they’ll likely find the village’s musical architecture very much to their liking.
One of the coolest shows of the day is the Lafayette “Swampede and Prairie Party” during the day at d.b.a., where C.C. Adcock, Steve Riley, Dave Ranson and friends will play an acoustic set, followed by the electric Cowboy Stew Revue with Adcock, Lil’ Buck Sinegal and more. And, with boiled crawfish!
