Help Wanted: Alexandra Scott, Kelcy Mae, and Deborah Cotton

Ways to spend your money to do something good.

[Updated] With one week to go, Alexandra Scott is hoping for your support for a recording project. As she explains in this video, she had set aside money to record new material - money she had to spend on her dog when he became ill. She can tell the rest of the story, but she is in the last week of a fundraising campaign at IndieGoGo.com. Scott is one the people who is woefully underrecorded, so any help not only benefits her but New Orleans.

In other fundraising news, this spring Kelcy Mae started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a new EP, The Fire. She was successful and it is out now at CD Baby. To celebrate, she'll play an EP-release party at Chickie Wah Wah Friday night at 8.

Finally, our thoughts go out to those injured in Sunday's shooting. Plans are being made for benefits to help them with their medical bills. Writer and activist for New Orleans' second line culture Deborah Cotton was among those who were shot, and you can get information on how to help her here.

Gambit’s Foundation for Entertainment Development and Education, Tipitina’s Foundation, United Way of Southeast Louisiana, and Silence Is Violence have started The 19 Fund to help the victims of the Mother's Day shooting, and there will be a benefit fundraiser Thursday, May 23 at Tipitina's. Wendell Pierce and Donald Harrison are the co-chairs for benefit, and Harrison will perform with Congo Square Nation. The Hot 8 Brass Band, the Stooges Brass Band, and Bonerama are confirmed to perform so far, with more acts to come. Tickets for the event are $40 and they're on sale now.
