Hangout Subs in for Voodoo
The modern rock/pop/electronic music festival now looks pretty interchangeable.
If you miss Voodoo, you’ve got Hangout in 2023.
Last week, Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores announced its lineup, and it looks a lot like a Voodoo lineup with well-traveled rock bands, one current hitmaker, and an established electronic artist on the top line. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Paramore have both played Voodoo, and they’re among the headliners along with SZA and Calvin Harris, who reached the height of his international prominence a decade ago—a long time in the electronic ecosystem.
Hangout will take place on the beach at Gulf Shores May 19-21, and unless things change, it’s as close as New Orleans is going to get to a rock festival in 2023. There’s every reason to expect that Voodoo will take another year off and Buku fell victim to the real estate development adjacent to the convention center scheduled to start next year.
Presale for Hangout ticket packages went on sale Friday.
Hangout’s lineup also includes Lil Nas X, Flume, Skrillex, and The Kid Laroi, and you can see the shape of the music festival we’ve come to recognize. Festival perennials Alison Wonderland, Thundercat, Tove Lo, and Yung Gravy, along with a full slate of electronic artists for the dance stage that will be crucial to the festival’s financial success, a few names to draw specific artists’ fans, and a lot of lesser known names to fill out the undercard. They’ll be fun for people who get there early, but they won’t motivate a lot of people to show up early.
