Friday: Gypsyphonic Disko, Zen Lunatic, 10 p.m., The Howlin' Wolf Den: Quickie Mart and Ben Ellman's Balkan bounce mix is one of my favorite recent developments in New Orleans. This is a rare live version of it. Saturday: Fleur de Tease presents The Prince Tribute Show, 8 & 10 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: At Voodoo, this burlesque show stopped traffic, partly with the dancing and partly with a smart, well-performed set of Prince covers performed by a band led by Michael Patrick Welch. These are the last two performances of this show. Sunday: Roky Erickson, Nude Beach, The Dropout, 9 p.m., One Eyed Jacks: After years of mental fragility that largely incapacitated him, it's great to see Roky Erickson visiting New Orleans more regularly to sing songs about bloody hammers, three-headed dogs and fire demons. Monday: Chucho Valdes, 7 p.m., Joy Theater: The Jazz and Heritage Foundation presents this Jazz Journey show with the legendary Cuban jazz pianist and his band. The show is free; no advance tickets. Also on Monday: Papa Grows Funk, 10 p.m., The Maple Leaf
Wednesday: Tryptophunk, 10 p.m., Tipitina's: John Gros described this show as the "Sons of George" - alumni of George Porter Jr.'s Runnin' Pardners, led by Porter himself. Other Events
New Orleans Fringe Fest is underway, primarily in Marigny and Bywater venues. Before the weekend's out, Fringe Fest will have presented 68 theatrical or performance-oriented events. Check the website for schedules, tickets and details.
On Saturday, there will be a Record Raid with 21 vendors selling vinyl, cassettes, LPs and more at Tulane (1150 Broadway, 10 a.m.) and the New Orleans Bookfair and Media Expo takes place at Magazine and Girod at 11 a.m. During the day, the 4th Annual Magazine Blues Festival takes place at the corner of Magazine and Napoleon with music by The Soul Rebels, Marc Stone's All-Star Band, the Pussyfooters, the 610 Stompers and more. Led Zeppelin's Celebration Day is a film of Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion show, and the Hard Rock Cafe will have a Celebration Day viewing party with videos of Zep performances starting in the 1960s starting at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, the New Orleans Po-Boy Festival returns to Oak Street, this year with two stages of music and a wide assortment of traditional and unusual po-boys by some of the city's finest restaurants.
On Tuesday, the Pay it Forward concert takes the generosity shown to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and sends it on to those affected by Hurricane Sandy's devastation. Dumpstaphunk, Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Amanda Shaw and a host of others will perform at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster, which will donate $3.90 of its service fee for each ticket sold to the NOLA Pay it Forward Fund.
