Elton John, The Who, Tony Bennett with Lady Gaga Top Jazz Fest Bill
Tickets go on sale Tuesday for this year's Jazz Fest.
To the surprise of nobody who noticed a gap in the routing for The Who’s North American tour, The Who will be one of the headliners in this year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, presented by Shell. Also on the top of the marquee are Elton John, Jimmy Buffett, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, No Doubt, Keith Urban, Pitbull, John Legend, T.I. and Ed Sheeran, and there remains one slot open for the final Sunday. Tickets go on sale Tuesday.
Americana is well represented in this year’s lineup with Ryan Adams, Kacey Musgraves, Shovels and Rope, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Amanda Shires, Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings with Waymore’s Outlaws. The other national names that jump off the screen: Anthony Hamilton, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Vieux Farka Touré, and Butler, Bernstein and the Hot 9, who were one of the highlights of last year’s festival.
Jazz Fest continues its love affair with reality singing competitions with yet another coach from The Voice—Gwen Stefani in No Doubt, and American Idol judge Keith Urban. The only original judge on The Voice not to appear at Jazz Fest is Blake Shelton, who'll play Bayou Country Superfest--also presented by Festival Productions--this year.
The biggest question marks are Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, which feels like a cynical effort to be contemporary without presenting the music that made Lady Gaga’s fame; Pitbull, whose Latin roots are barely recognizable in his eurodisco pop; and Chicago, whose lineup is so depleted of signature members including vocalist Peter Cetera that they seem more appropriate for Gretna Fest at this point.
On first look, the contemporary jazz offerings don’t have the smooth jazz leanings of recent lineups, with the Charles Lloyd Quartet and possibly Christian McBride’s Big Band with Dianne Reeves and Jeffrey Osborne as signs of life.
Tickets start at $58 and will be $70 at the door. Advance tickets can be bought online or in person at the Smoothie King box office. VIP packages go on sale online Tuesday as well.
