Austra Brought Future Politics to Life at Gasa Gasa
Photographer Steph Catsoulis was there for the Toronto-based electronic pop band's show last Thursday night and got the evidence.
Last Thursday night, Toronto’s Austra played Gasa Gasa in support of the band’s new album, Future Politics. Our new photographer Steph Catsoulis was there, and she says the album’s electronic chill doesn’t do justice to the band’s live sound.
“Super fans and the mixed crowd couldn't help but dance during their high-spirited electro-pop performance full of interesting synths and keyboard sounds,” she says. “Even though it wasn't a sold out show, the room definitely felt full.”
Even with Gasa Gasa’s rudimentary light show, singer Katie Stelmanis commanded the stage and the audience’s attention. “Her tone was similar to that of Florence Welch with more electronic spin on it,” Catsoulis says. “The band had great enough chemistry with the audience that they decided that they wouldn't tease everyone by leaving the stage for their encore.”
