Sierra Green Shares Her Milky Way Before Playing Jazz Fest Saturday

Sierra Green

A classic soul singer influenced by some classic artists.

Sierra Green’s a classic soul singer down to her roots in the church in the 7th Ward and cutting her musical teeth singing in bars on Frenchmen Street. How old school is she? Green is so old school she submitted her Milky Way by hand. She doesn’t have a computer.

Green has a new album, Here We Are, due out June 21, and she plays Jazz Fest on Saturday at 12:25 p.m. in The Blues Tent. We asked Green for her Milky Way, the songs that chart her musical universe, and she’s so old school that she leaned hard on some classic singers.

For other dates around Jazz Fest, check her schedule at her website.

"At Last" - Etta James

The song was one of the first songs I sang on the Frenchmen. To me it means love everlasting. I found a love.

"Summertime" - Ella Fitzgerald

It reminds me of my grandmother's jukebox in a time where times were hard, but we made it.

"Let it be Me" - Irma Thomas

Looking for love. Can't find it, so let your love be in me.

"Sweet Love" - Anita Baker

It lets me know that when I feel love, it's real and it's a sweet love because he is special.

"It’s a Man’s Man’s Man's World" - James Brown

It's a man's world by default, but there would not be a man with a woman or girl.

"I Love You Too Much" - The Bee Gees

Story of my life. I'm always loving the most, getting the short end of the stick, but I still love you.

"Take A Chance" - Mike Perez and Sierra Green

I had to make an audience take a chance on me because I'm fearless, and you can't lose betting on me.

"Good Morning Heartache" - Billie Holiday

I know heartbreak well. It was a song of saying goodbye to heartache because I am worth loving.
