New music from Neko Case, Richard Buckner, and Nine Inch Nails, and previews of shows by Lucinda Williams, Dent May, Gold Panda and the Ponderosa Stomp.

This Week's Soundtrack

1. "Madonna of the Wasps" - Neko Case: A Robyn Hitchcock cover from Neko Case's new album, The Worse Things Get. I love that she has mimicked Hitchcock's pronunciation of "madonner."

2. "Marching the Hate Machines" - Lucinda Williams: A cover of a Thievery Corporation song first sung by The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne. Williams will be at Tipitina's on Saturday and Sunday celebrating the 25th anniversary of her self-titled album on Rough Trade Records.

3. "When You Tell Me How it Is" - Richard Buckner: From the new album, Surrounded. Buckner will play The Old U.S. Mint on October 6.

4. "Seven Horses" - Jonathan Rado: From the new album Law and Order by the leader of Foxygen.

5. "Pulling on Golem Locks" - Ratty Scurvics: From Ratty's A Wooden Nickel on Fire.

6. "Cloak of Feathers" - The Sword: Metal band The Sword plays the House of Blues Friday.

7. "I'm Ready to be Old" - Dent May: Dent May plays Gasa Gasa Thursday.

8. "Grave Mistake" - Rock City Morgue: On Friday the 13th, the band will play a CD-release party for its new album, White Devil.

9. "Monkey Fever" - Chris Montez: Montez will be a part of this year's Ponderosa Stomp, which runs from October 3-5.

10. "Somebody's Watching You" - Sly and the Family Stone: More from the excellent new box set, Higher!

11. "Oh No Not My Baby" - Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown: Brown will also be at this year's Ponderosa Stomp.

12. "Funky President (People It's Bad)" - James Brown: Saturday at Tipitina's, DJ Soul Sister will celebrate her birthday with a tribute to James Brown by Nigel Hall's Big Payback Band with guest Christian McBride.

13. "Lusaka by Night" - John Wizards: Electronic African music from the new album, John Wizards.

14. "Junk City II" - Gold Panda: Gold Panda will perform Thursday night at the Hi-Ho Lounge.

15. "Painful Like" - Austra: Austra will play Sunday at One Eyed Jacks.

16. "That Feeling" - Diana: Toronto's Diana will open for Austra.

17. "Pacing Around the Church" - Cold Cave: Cold Cave plays Friday at One Eyed Jacks.

18. "Past, Present & Future (Rock & Roll)" - Wax Tailor: DJ Wax Tailor will perform with guests Saturday at the Howlin' Wolf.

19. "Space Girl Blues" - Devo: The recent issue of Mojo reviewed Hardcore Devo volumes 1 and 2 by talking about the lyrics - to me, a strange way to approach Devo. For me, the most interesting part of this pre-Warner Brothers period is the abrasive, industrial sound. The sonic textures give these songs a grit that Eno made more colorful for Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo before they largely disappeared in favor of the cartoony cynicism that came to dominate their sound.

20. "In Two" - Nine Inch Nails: From the new Hesitation Marks. Nine Inch Nails headline Saturday at this year's Voodoo Experience.

21. "Emanuel Can't Come Close Enough" - Dead Gaze: Dead Gaze will open for Dent May at Gasa Gasa.

22. "Black Coffee" - Black Flag: The Black Flag reunion tour comes to The Howlin' Wolf Wednesday. So far, reviews have been pretty good for this lineup, which includes guitarist Greg Ginn and singer Ron Reyes.

23. "I Don't Share" - Missing Monuments: The Missing Monuments will play a special early show at Siberia Friday as part of Julian's birthday celebration.

24. "City Swan" - Neko Case: More from Neko Case's new The Worse Things Get.
