Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho—better know by her stage name Arlo Parks—made her New Orleans debut Monday night at the Joy Theater, and her voice, or voices, made the show. Her speaking and singing voices didn’t match, the former being very British and sociable while the later was breathy and intimate, delivered as if she was communicating with one person. Her material deal from her debut studio album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, and her first two EPs explore relationships and their costs, but then between songs she proclaimed he love for the city and said that she had, “the best fried chicken ever.” She didn’t say where.

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Puma Blue was supposed to open the show, but was scratched at the last minute and replaced by trip-hop artist Luna Loxx aka BLÜ.  She is a local and was so excited to be opening for Arlo.  At times that enthusiasm almost got the best of her, but she was able to reel it back in and put on an amazing show. BLÜ will play Cafe Istanbul on October 29 as part of SPÜKTOPIA: an extraterrestrial experience.
