The folk duo plays a Christmas concert at the House of Blues after releasing a Christmas EP, and we're giving away a pair of tickets to the show.
Earlier this year, Jon Caramanica of The New York Times wrote of Johnnyswim:
“Diamonds” (Big Picnic) is their first album after a series of EPs, and like, say, Mumford & Sons, they build something surprisingly muscular from very basic parts. Mr. [Abner] Ramirez attacks his guitar as if it owed him money, and he produces these songs, with their plain-spoken, easy-folk lyrics, with gusto. Individually, Ms. [Amanda] Sudano-Ramirez, a daughter of Donna Summer, is impressive but sometimes distractingly husky, and Mr. Ramirez is too often tentative. But when the two harmonize — well, this is the sign of a happy union. She is full of fervor, and he is the soothing counterforce.
The duo's new EP, A Johnnyswim Christmas, is charmingly intimate and domestic, as if they've taken a breather from their own songs' ambitions. In that sense, the EP hearkens back to classic holiday recordings and is all about the simple pleasure of singing. A Johnnyswim Christmas strikes a nice balance with one original, one spiritual, four popular songs (including a lovely instrumental version of "Christmas Time is Here") and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve"--not strictly speaking a Christmas song, but ....
