"Freshly Spilt Milk" presents new music from Courtney Barnett, Made Violent, Van Hunt, Go Wolf, Moon Honey and more.
1. “Old Hat” – Van Hunt: Bluesy lyrics and carefully layered percussion lend themselves to the aura of longing around Van Hunt’s track, “Old Hat.”
2. “Pedestrian at Best” – Courtney Barnett: Heavily distorted stream of consciousness lyrics bleed through thrashing guitars in this surprisingly sweet and unassuming single. The chorus features phrases like, “Put me on a pedestal I promise I’ll disappoint you / Tell me I’m exceptional, I promise to exploit you.” Look out for Barnett at ACL on June 5.
3. “Air” – Waxahatchee: Ivy Tripp is the new album from Waxahatchee on Merge Records, and “Air” is a single that tugs on the dull apprehension that lurks throughout the LP. You can check out Waxachatee at Gasa Gasa on April 19.
4. “On My Own” – Made Violent: After only one single, rock ‘n roll band Made Violent signed to Statime International in 2014. Now, with the release of their debut, self-titled EP, the New York group proves they are hungry for more. “On My Own” showcases Joe White’s whisky-soaked vocals and suggests a strong Strokes influence.
5. “Even God” – Go Wolf: “Even God” is as aching as it is appealing; gentle piano notes drifting over crisp vocals from the Belfast group. You can pick up Go Wolf’s EP, Running, on iTunes now.
6. “Runner" (Ansible Remix) – From Indian Lakes: This indie electronic track is pleasantly atmospheric and progressive. From Indian Lakes will be releasing Absent Sounds Remixed Sounds on April 21.
7. “Boy Magic” – Moon Honey: It’s hard to take an artist seriously who labels their music #art on Soundcloud but in this case the chance is well worth it. Warbling vocals reminiscent of LP drive the song “Boy Magic,” which is sweet as a lullaby.
8. “Candy” – Vows: “Candy” is a relatively bare, homegrown approach to love and lust that marks the first release off Vows’ new album, Soon Enough Love. It was recorded in the musicians’ respective homes in Vermont and New Jersey, in a collaboration that primarily took place online. Despite the distance, the group’s synergy is palpable.
9. “In For It” – Tory Lanez prod. RL Grime: An R&B/trap crossover banger sure to set fire to clubs everywhere, Tory Lanez continues to show his artistic chops on “In For It” with assistance from bass aficionado RL Grime.
10. “Maybe” – Carmada: Lush piano tones and soulful vocals give way to sawing synths and heavy 808 bass in this single from Carmada’s new EP, Realise.
