Jazz Fest Preview: Jason Isbell and Patterson Hood Explain Alabama

Recently, Marc Maron interviewed the two separately on his WTF podcast.

I'd hoped that we'd have an interview with songwriter and guitarist Jason Isbell before he plays Jazz Fest (Friday, Apr. 25, 3:35 p.m., Samsung Galaxy Stage), but he's going to be out of the country when we'd need to talk, so that's not going to work. Fortunately, comedian Marc Maron recently sat down with Isbell, who insists his name is pronounced "IS-bull," and it's the Texas Isbells who pronounce it "Is-BELL."

Maron can be hit or miss when talking to musicians. He was too impressed with Jack White to keep his inner fan from showing, and he didn't know enough of Nick Cave's career to keep from showing his ass. In this case, he has a good, rangy conversation with Isbell that covers soul, southern rock, booze, and growing up Southern in the shadow of Muscle Shoals.

After posting that interview last Wednesday, Maron posted an interview with Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers on Friday. They won't play Jazz Fest but will play The Civic Theatre May 2 and 3. I'm a firm believer that if you can't get a good Patterson Hood interview, you need to hang up the laptop and get a real job, and he's solid, entertaining, interesting and thoughtful with Maron as he walks patiently through the band's history. He skips around a bit in the later years, but he makes it up to the band's new album, English Oceans
