After rain forced the postponement of his jazz funeral, Uncle Lionel Batiste will be honored this morning - weather willing.
"Uncle" Lionel Batiste's afterlife has been as unusual as his life. He was honored with a second line separate from his jazz funeral, complete with honorary watches that initially earned the ire of Wendell Pierce. Rather than lying in state for his visitation, Batiste stood, but last week's tropical weather forced the jazz funeral for him to be postponed until today. It will start at 11 a.m. Charbonnet - Labat - Glapion Funeral Home (1615 St. Philip St.). After the procession, Batiste will be interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery (4100 Norman Mayer Blvd.).
Here's a nicely written tribute to Batiste.
