Flying Lotus Stilled the Crowd at The Joy

Flying Lotus (Stephen Ellison) returned to the Joy Theatre on Thursday after a two year break from performances in New Orleans. His last appearance ended when Ellison spiked the microphone and threw a tantrum onstage. 

“I did what last time?” FlyLo said towards the end of his set. “I don’t even remember yesterday.” 

New Orleans Musicians Show Love and Support for Lil' Queenie

For season one of HBO’s Treme, music supervisor Blake Leyh wanted to include a performance by Lil’ Queenie, but the show aimed for chronological accuracy and she wasn’t in New Orleans when the series’ story started in late 2005. Leigh “Lil’ Queenie” Harris had been a talent big enough to be known solely by her nickname before Katrina, but since she never moved back after evacuating, her voice and presence has been absent from the new New Orleans.

Roots rocker Butch Walker grew up playing Rolling Stones songs in his high school cover band. “I was mostly into heavy metal and stuff like that, so there’s no way I was going to be great at having the nuance and technique of those players,” he says. “I was probably playing those songs on a shitty Ibanez with a pointy headstock and too much distortion, not really nailing the sentiment and the vibe.”
