Danny Brown Knows His Audiences Wants To Party

Danny Brown isn’t interested in proving his maturity. His most recent album, uknowhatimsayin¿, demonstrates a more mature Danny Brown. It shifts from a landscape rooted in drugs and partying, and it relies less on the flashy, urgent beats that defined his early career. The album seems unconcerned with getting listeners to dance, and instead feels more introspective. But that's not the Brown that showed up at Republic on October 16.

Sleigh Bells Powercharm Republic During Carnival

Last Friday night, Sleigh Bells played Republic, and according to photographer Steph Catsoulis, the years in service and size of the room haven’t quieted the band at all. Five albums into its exploration of the place where heavy metal guitar, hip-hop drums, and high school cheers meet, Sleigh Bells stays true to its core values in concert, which translated to a very loud show.

JoJo Gave and Got Mad Love at Republic

JoJo’s career started in the early 2000s when MTV’s TRL and the teen pop era it escorted into America’s malls and living rooms were starting their decline. She received acclaim in 2004 for the single “Leave (Get Out),” which she recorded when she was 12. The single went gold and earned her MTV Music Award, Billboard Music Award and Radio Disney Music Award nominations (she won the RD for “Best Video That Rocks”).

Angel Olsen Shows Off Modestly

Angel Olsen’s voice is a force of nature. It’s pained and soothing, soulful and ethereal all at once, a shock to the system of any listener with two functioning eardrums and a beating heart. Her lyrics feel deeply personal, often addressing a past love or an unrequited interest directly in the second person, and when her voice floats out of a pair of speakers (or better yet, headphones), she’s speaking directly to you.

#Mellogang: Join Or Die

#Mellogang poured into The Republic on Thursday in full force to see Marshmello. Tickets sold out and were reselling for upwards of $120, so The Republic was packed wall-to-wall. Marshmello must be doing something right if so many people are excited to see him, but I quickly learned the loyalty and scope of his fan base that night as they so easily tested the capacity of The Republic.
