Zack Smith Finds His Exit

This Voodoo Music Experience was the first year since 2008 that Zack Smith was not backstage behind the Preservation Hall Stage with a makeshift photo booth and a camera or three. The end of that stage after Voodoo 2012 also meant the end of Smith’s space. One year, he had a sheet of plywood on a couple of sawhorses supporting a handful of cameras, some that shot to digital, some to film, all with different formats.

Davell and Pres Hall Got Personality

There's a lot to be said for being yourself. In the case of Davell Crawford, I'm not sure he can be anything else. He took 14 years between albums, which says he's following any well-worn career script. On My Gift for You (Basin Street), he seizes the opportunity and unloads 15 songs that take well more than an hour to run through, in the process honoring as many of his gifts as possible.

Treme: Let's Make a Deal

This week's episode does what Treme was made to do - illuminate a fundamental drama that most of us face.If things go according to plan, most of us will not have to survive a zombie apocalypse and track down a devious computer hacker/killer? More likely: How badly do you want your dream, and what deals will you make to achieve it? Annie (Lucia Micarelli) approaches manager Marvin Frey (Michael Cerveris) and asks, "Where do I sign?" and the scene could only have played more Faustian if it was shot in brimstone smell-o-vision.

Clap Your Hands

This Week's Soundtrack looks ahead to shows by Fiona Apple, Animal Collective, Hoodie Allen, and the benefit for the preservation of Professor Longhair's house, as well as new music from Grizzly Bear, Dinosaur Jr. and Voodoo Experience acts Kaskade and the Gaslamp Killer.
