It was 15 minutes before she was scheduled to come on and the crowd was already chanting Lana Del Rey’s name. As more people poured in, everyone was discussing the last time they saw her and what they were hoping she’d play. The lights dimmed, and the spotlight focused on two dancers on stage fanning themselves lavishly. Out walked Lana in a matching sequined dress and boots combo with an athletic jacket on top, and the crowd shrieked collectively.

[Update] Those who know Tav Falco know for either Panther Burns’ blind-man-with-a-flare-gun approach to rockabilly and American roots music, or they know him as the tango guy. The latter is a trickier stance to get a grip on because his edge, if he has one, isn’t obvious. Maybe his tongue is every so delicately in his cheek, but he might really be serious too.

Anemoia and Burlesque at the Orpheum Theatre

A sterilized relic of Bourbon Street was on display in the Orpheum Theatre on Sunday night. Cupid’s Cabaret featured aerialists, singers, burlesque dancers and a contortionist, all of who gracefully dispatched with layers of clothing mid-performance. The music was mostly contemporary, but it did not detract from the nostalgic aura that swathed the experience. Meanwhile, the renovated Orpheum Theatre suffused a formal integrity that the burlesque dancers playfully subverted.
