The Ponderosa Stomp Returns with a Focus on Garage Bands in October

The Ponderosa Stomp will return October 6 and 7, this year to The Orpheum, where headliners will include Archie Bell (“Tighten Up”) , Gary U.S. Bonds (“Quarter to Three”), and Roky Erickson, who’ll play songs by the garage band that launched his legend, Thirteenth Floor Elevators.

A Quick Take on Jazz Fest 2017

What are the reasons to be excited by the lineup for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell? Not the top two lines of the talent release, which are filled with artists we’ve seen in the last decade. That’s certainly the case with Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Maroon 5. Will every Acura and Gentilly headliner this year be someone who has headlined the stage before?

Stevie, Petty, Maroon 5 Top the Jazz Fest Lineup

The returns of Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Maroon 5 and the focus on the music of Cuba are the news in the lineup for the 2017 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell. Kings of Leon, Pitbull, Alabama Shakes, and Widespread Panic will also return, as will Dave Matthews—this time in a duet setting with Tim Reynolds. The top newcomers to the lineup are Usher with The Roots, Meghan Trainor, Lorde, and Nas with The Soul Rebels.

Buku 2017 Features Deadmau5, Travis Scott, Zeds Dead, Young Thug

Deadmau5, Travis Scott, Zeds Dead, Young Thug, Zhu, Tycho, Jauz, 21 Savage and Sleigh Bells are among the artists who’ll perform at the BUKU Music and Art Project March 10 and 11 at Mardi Gras World. Last year, BUKU focused on its core constituency—the electronic dance music audience—and had its strongest year yet.

Tool, The Weeknd, Arcade Fire Top Voodoo Lineup

Last year's Voodoo Music + Arts Experience was a fraught one even before rain and mud forced it to end a day early. The presence of country rock artists The Zac Brown Band on the lineup and Deadmau5 as a festival closer seemed to be a sign that a festival that began 18 years ago as an alternative rock event had lost its way.

Jazz Fest is Re-Reeling in the Years

This year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell is playing to its base. The festival generally caters first to baby boomers, though in recent years it stretched the “jazz and heritage” concept over Phoenix, The Strokes, Maroon 5, Foo Fighters, and Ed Sheeran as well. This year, Jazz Fest only veers into the pop mainstream for Nick Jonas (really?) and a few Congo Square acts (J. Cole, Jazmine Sullivan, and Flo Rida), and spends a lot of time not just reliving but re-reliving the ’60s and ‘70s.
