Rob Guillory Prepares for the Last "Chew"

Lafayette comic book artist Rob Guillory thought he understood Chew when he drew the first issues in 2009. He thought he was telling a straightforward crime story with a main character who was a “cibopath”—someone who received psychic impressions from whatever he ate. He used his unusual gift to fight food-related crime as part of the FDA in a world where chickens are illegal after a catastrophic bird flu epidemic.

Kevin Sekhani Shows No Mercy

[Updated] Lafayette’s Mercy Brothers were a joyride through the Americana gospel songbook, playing the semi-sacred songs of Hank Williams, and singer Kevin Sekhani belted out the songs with equal parts sideshow huckster and reformed sinner. The band played with the passion of someone whose spirits were fortified with spirits, and in retrospect, it’s hard to imagine how far such a concept could have lasted long.

Jazz Fest: Feufollet Has New Musical Universes

Feufollet has grown up in the public eye. The Lafayette-based band began as young Cajun music prodigies, but as it's members have matured into their mid-20s, they’ve begun to question some of the things once taken as givens. “Cajun music can have a tendency to be very utilitarian,” Feufollet’s Chris Stafford said when I interviewed him for a New Orleans Advocate story last year.

Feufollet Debuts "Two Universes" Saturday

The band had just finished recording its first album outside Louisiana—in Austin—and Stafford was excited by the band’s evolution. When Feufollet started, he and the rest of the band were kids; now they’re adults and their tastes have developed as well.

Joshua Caffery remembers a reality check moment from his days with The Red Stick Ramblers, when they played a sold-out CD-release show at Grant Street Dance Hall in Lafayette, then performed to two friends the next night at the Hi-Ho Lounge here in New Orleans. A marriage and a Masters Degree gave him an occasion to reconsider if the touring band life was for him, and he decided no.
