Mississippi Has Boyfriend Issues

New Orleans rappers can't catch a break in Mississippi. In February, Big Freedia had a show in Hattiesburg cancelled when the owner of The Dollar Box was concerned that the state's Alcohol Beverage Control board would find Freedia and her dancers' "gyrating" to be too much. On April 9, Boyfriend faced a similar issue when she was scheduled to play Proud Larry's in Oxford.

A Remixed Superstition and a Remixed Carly Rae Jepsen

1. “Stepping Outside” - Val Hollie: The first track from New Orleans’ Val Hollie’s upcoming self-titled EP, which is due out November 13 at the Saturn Bar.

2. “This Must Be the Place” - Kishi Bashi: Kishi Bashi recorded his cover of this Talking Heads song for a collection of 45s, and again for his upcoming album, String Quartet Live!, November 13.

Boyfriend Wants More Attention, and Val Hollie Steps Outside

On the opening night of Boyfriend's tour with Big Freedia and Hibou, My Spilt Milk shot 360-degree photos backstage at the House of Blues. Today while on tour, she has released a new remix of "Attention" by Boogie T. This remix gives the song more grind than the original, emphasizing the hip action that is implied in almost every Boyfriend song.

Last Night: Backstage with Boyfriend

Last night, Big Freedia, Boyfriend, and Seattle's Hibou kicked off a five-week tour at the House of Blues. Hibou's '80s airy, British post-punk influenced rock showed predictably more muscle than the band does on its recordings, and Freedia has learned how to make a bounce show last more than 20 minutes without seeming redundant--something that had to happen for bounce to have legs outside of New Orleans.
