Jade Bird Invests In American Fans

It’s difficult to these days to be hopeful about anything American, but Jade Bird finds excitement in the American music scene. The 21-year-old, British songwriter born Jade Elizabeth Bird has an affinity for American songwriters, and is working to keep her work porous and evolving. She is currently opening for Hozier on tour, and will have a stop in New Orleans at the Fillmore Wednesday, March 27.

It was 15 minutes before she was scheduled to come on and the crowd was already chanting Lana Del Rey’s name. As more people poured in, everyone was discussing the last time they saw her and what they were hoping she’d play. The lights dimmed, and the spotlight focused on two dancers on stage fanning themselves lavishly. Out walked Lana in a matching sequined dress and boots combo with an athletic jacket on top, and the crowd shrieked collectively.

Friday night at Voodoo, I found myself thinking about why England makes such good rock stars. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine was certainly one headlining the festival. Everything about her performance was big—the voice, certainly, but also the passions and the energy. She stayed in motion for the entire set without seeming frenetic.
