[Updated] Tommy Stinson seems like he’d be happiest with a beer, a guitar, and blank sheet of paper for a setlist. Since his Replacements’ bandmate Paul Westerberg crafted lyrics as precise as the jigsaw puzzles you can imagine him reclusively hunched over, it’s tempting to attribute the band’s legendary smash-up derby approach to Stinson. His tracks on his own with Bash & Pop hang together with a Faces-like looseness, and he looks so happy in live videos when playing on his own.

When singer Carsie Blanton released Not Old, Not New in 2014, the album seemed like a step sideways. Her calling card before it was semi-acoustic pop rooted in the singer/songwriter tradition, but her songs are physical enough and spare enough in their arrangements that there’s not a hint of the coffee shop left in them.

Recently, Lauren Keenan visited The Wooden Wings to videotape an interview and performance by former My Spilt Milk contributor Cherie LeJeune and Molly Portier. The two have worked to find the right lineup for the band, but their songs and harmonies remain at its core.

The band will return tonight to play The Circle Bar after some time off to work on new material. The show starts at 10 p.m.
