The reunited Afghan Whigs will play Tipitina's October 19. In the meantime, they have a new song available for free download: a cover of Frank Ocean's "Lovecrimes." It's a great choice and a strong track that honors the unsettling nature of Ocean's song. The burbling synth under the intro ratchets up the tension, so when the Whigs' kick in, they have a lot of punch. Ocean and Afghan Whigs' front man Greg Dulli share an interest in the place where relationships get complicated, and Dulli owns the lyric as if he wrote it.

Nice link. My favorite though is a little known ep the Afghan Whigs put out in the early 90's - Uptown Avalon. Dulli covered Band of Gold and Come See About Me. Two 60's pop/r&b gems that he converts into brooding masterpieces that explore the depths of the heartache that the originals glossed over given their upbeat musical accompaniment.
I agree. This song made me want to pull out the version of "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road" from that EP.
